He snuck quickly along the deck and down some stairs, following the smell of food coming from somewhere deep in the ship.\u00a0 He slunk along dark passageways, his whiskers grazing the cold metal walls until he came to a brightly lit room.\u00a0 Inside were men, laughing and eating.\u00a0 Their forks scraped their plates as they shoveled mounds of fish into their mouths and slurped coffee &#8211; and MILK!\u00a0 Boo was so excited \u2013 this seemed like heaven on Earth \u2013 a whole room full of FOOD!\u00a0 He inched into the room and skittered under a table.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Then he waited.\u00a0 And waited.\u00a0 And waited.\u00a0 No food fell to the floor and no one seemed to notice him.\u00a0 This was getting annoying.\u00a0 The food smelled so delicious and his tummy was rumbling.\u00a0 So, he started to meow.\u00a0 Faintly at first and then with more gusto.\u00a0 Finally, a young sailor heard him and peeked under the table.\u00a0 Boo glared at him with big, glowing eyes.\u00a0 The man laughed and threw a piece of fish on the floor.\u00a0 Boo gobbled it up and meowed for more.\u00a0 Soon, he was feasting on a whole plate of fish.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Other sailors gathered \u2018round, laughing and joking about a cat on board.\u00a0 But they had lots of questions, too.\u00a0 Who did he belong to?\u00a0 How did he get on board?\u00a0 Would the captain let them keep him?\u00a0 One sailor rushed off to ask the captain and came back a few minutes later.\u00a0 \u201cWe can keep him!\u201d he shouted.\u00a0 \u201cThe captain said he can stay on board and catch the mice!\u201d\u00a0 The room erupted in cheers and laughter!<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Battleship &#8220;Bismarck&#8221;<\/h3>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Boo\u2019s new home was the 41,000-ton German Battleship called the Bismarck, a prize ship of the Nazi Navy or \u201cKriegsmarine.\u201d A day or so later, it sailed out of port for the open sea.\u00a0 Boo had never been on a ship before.\u00a0 He couldn\u2019t understand why the ground seemed to sway below his paws.\u00a0 This made stalking mice a little trickier, but he soon got his \u201csea legs\u201d and enjoyed chasing the rodents around the ship.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bedtimehistorystories.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Bundesarchiv_Bild_193-04-1-26_Schlachtschiff_Bismarck-1024x502.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2016\" width=\"456\" height=\"224\" \/><\/p>\n<figcaption>Bismarck<\/figcaption>\n<\/figure>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>One day, Boo heard lots of yelling and running \u2013 and then loud booms.\u00a0 Suddenly the ship shook like thunder and started to tilt.\u00a0 Sailors screamed and ran through the hallways as water rushed into the rooms, rising quickly.\u00a0 Boo didn\u2019t know what was happening, but he didn\u2019t like it.\u00a0 And he REALLY didn\u2019t like water.\u00a0 And this was very cold water.\u00a0 Boo followed the sailors and raced up metal steps. He saw big waves of water rushing across the deck.\u00a0 Men were jumping into the water and shouting at others.\u00a0 Boo didn\u2019t know what to do, but he knew he couldn\u2019t stay on the ship \u2013 it was slowly sinking below the waves.\u00a0 Boo saw a piece of wood floating in the water nearby.\u00a0 He crouched and sprang into the air, landing on the wooden plank.\u00a0 It was hard holding on at first, but he dug his claws into the wood and held on.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Soon the ship sank out of sight below the water, along with many of the men who had become his friends.\u00a0 Boo huddled on the plank for many hours, rocking in the waves, exhausted and alone.\u00a0 Was he ever going to get off the plank?<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Battleship &#8220;Cossack&#8221;<\/h3>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Many hours later, another huge battleship came into view \u2013 a British battleship called the Cossack.\u00a0 Someone saw Boo floating on the plank and hoisted him onto the ship.\u00a0 They wrapped him in a scratchy blanket and took him to a room like the other ship, filled with food and men.\u00a0 These men\u2019s voices sounded different.\u00a0 But the food tasted the same \u2013 delicious! The men started calling him \u201cOscar\u201d \u2013 probably because he was rescued from a German ship and \u201cOscar\u201d was a common German name.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignleft size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bedtimehistorystories.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/HMS_Cossack.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2017\" width=\"363\" height=\"259\" \/><\/p>\n<figcaption>HMS Cossack<\/figcaption>\n<\/figure>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>The British sailors made a little swinging hammock for Boo \u2013 now Oscar \u2013 and wrote his name on the side. In no time, he was curled up in the hammock, purring and licking his paws in utter contentment.\u00a0 The sailors laughed and clapped each other on the back.\u00a0 They had a lucky mascot on board!<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>For the next several months, Boo, now Oscar, sailed the oceans \u2013 the warm Mediterranean and the chilly North Atlantic.\u00a0 He stalked mice and curled up on laps.\u00a0 Life seemed perfect again \u2013 until it wasn\u2019t.\u00a0 Several months later, Oscar heard another loud boom, followed by a violent shudder, and the now-familiar sound of running and screaming.\u00a0 The ship had been hit by a torpedo!\u00a0 Once again, Boo was running for his life and jumping onto another floating plank.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">HMS Ark Royal<\/h3>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>On October 27, 1941, just a few days before Halloween, Oscar the black cat was found floating near Gibraltar and was picked up once again by British sailors on yet another ship, the HMS Ark Royal, a battleship that had helped to sink the Bismark, his first home.\u00a0 When the sailors heard of Oscar\u2019s adventures on other battleships, they gave him a new name, \u201cUnsinkable Sam!\u201d<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bedtimehistorystories.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/1920px-Ark_Royal_NARA_45513193-1024x557.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2018\" width=\"389\" height=\"211\" \/><\/p>\n<figcaption>HMS Ark Royal<\/figcaption>\n<\/figure>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>This third ship was considered very lucky \u2013 it had survived several near misses and the Germans thought they had sunk her numerous times.\u00a0 But \u201cUnsinkable Sam\u201d (or Boo or Oscar) couldn\u2019t catch a break.\u00a0 Once again, his new home, the HMS Ark Royal, was hit by a torpedo within two weeks.\u00a0 Unsinkable Sam was enraged.\u00a0 Why did this keep happening to him?\u00a0 He hated everything about ships and water now.\u00a0 He just wanted to be on dry land.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Once again, he was found floating on a plank in the water, and eventually picked up hissing and growling but unharmed.\u00a0 He was delivered to the Governor\u2019s house in Gibraltar.\u00a0 He was finally on the solid ground surrounded by trees and birds.\u00a0 No more fish, mice, or battleships for Boo!<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>While at the Governor\u2019s house, he heard the words \u201cWorld War II\u201d spoken a lot.\u00a0 Was that what all the ships and noise and water were about?\u00a0 Well, one day he heard the Governor state that \u201cWorld War II\u201d was over and everyone was leaving the island of Gibraltar to go home.\u00a0 But where would Boo go?<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Belfast, Ireland<\/h3>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>He was soon put into a crate and transported to Ireland.\u00a0 His new home was in Belfast at a \u201cHome for Sailors,\u201d the perfect place for war veterans like Boo, or Oscar, or Unsinkable Sam.\u00a0 And that is where he spent the remainder of his days, stalking crickets and chasing birds. He lived happily for 14 more years, until November 1955, when he passed away in peace and comfort, in a house filled with love.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Legend of Unsinkable Sam<\/h3>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>So, what do you think of Boo\u2019s \u2013 or \u201cUnsinkable Sam\u2019s\u201d story?\u00a0 Do you believe that cats have nine lives?\u00a0 Do you believe the myth of black cats crossing your path and bringing bad luck? Do you believe this cat was a blessing or a curse to the battleships and sailors?<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>I think this cat was very lucky.\u00a0 He survived three battleship sinkings where many men did not.\u00a0 On his first ship, the Bismarck, only 139 sailors survived out of 2,200, while 139 sailors died after the sinking of his second ship, the Cossack.\u00a0 But that wasn\u2019t the cat\u2019s fault.\u00a0 He just happened to be aboard battleships in the middle of a war. He saw big waves of water rushing across the deck.\u00a0 Men were jumping into the water and shouting at others.\u00a0 Boo didn\u2019t know what to do, but he knew he couldn\u2019t stay on the ship \u2013 it was slowly sinking below the waves.\u00a0 Boo saw a piece of wood floating in the water nearby.\u00a0 He crouched and sprang into the air, landing on the wooden plank.\u00a0 It was hard holding on at first, but he dug his claws into the wood and held on.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Soon the ship sank out of sight below the water, along with many of the men who had become his friends.\u00a0 Boo huddled on the plank for many hours, rocking in the waves, exhausted and alone.\u00a0 Was he ever going to get off the plank?<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:heading {\"level\":3} -->\n<h3>The Battleship \"Cossack\"<\/h3>\n<!-- \/wp:heading -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Many hours later, another huge battleship came into view \u2013 a British battleship called the Cossack.&nbsp; Someone saw Boo floating on the plank and hoisted him onto the ship.&nbsp; They wrapped him in a scratchy blanket and took him to a room like the other ship, filled with food and men.&nbsp; These men\u2019s voices sounded different.&nbsp; But the food tasted the same \u2013 delicious! The men started calling him \u201cOscar\u201d \u2013 probably because he was rescued from a German ship and \u201cOscar\u201d was a common German name.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:image {\"align\":\"left\",\"id\":2017,\"width\":363,\"height\":259,\"sizeSlug\":\"full\",\"linkDestination\":\"none\"} -->\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignleft size-full is-resized\"><img src=\"https:\/\/bedtimehistorystories.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/HMS_Cossack.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2017\" width=\"363\" height=\"259\"\/><figcaption>HMS Cossack<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<!-- \/wp:image -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>The British sailors made a little swinging hammock for Boo \u2013 now Oscar \u2013 and wrote his name on the side. In no time, he was curled up in the hammock, purring and licking his paws in utter contentment.\u00a0 The sailors laughed and clapped each other on the back.\u00a0 They had a lucky mascot on board!<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>For the next several months, Boo, now Oscar, sailed the oceans \u2013 the warm Mediterranean and the chilly North Atlantic.\u00a0 He stalked mice and curled up on laps.\u00a0 Life seemed perfect again \u2013 until it wasn\u2019t.\u00a0 Several months later, Oscar heard another loud boom, followed by a violent shudder, and the now-familiar sound of running and screaming.\u00a0 The ship had been hit by a torpedo!\u00a0 Once again, Boo was running for his life and jumping onto another floating plank.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:heading {\"level\":3} -->\n<h3>HMS Ark Royal<\/h3>\n<!-- \/wp:heading -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>On October 27, 1941, just a few days before Halloween, Oscar the black cat was found floating near Gibraltar and was picked up once again by British sailors on yet another ship, the HMS Ark Royal, a battleship that had helped to sink the Bismark, his first home.\u00a0 When the sailors heard of Oscar\u2019s adventures on other battleships, they gave him a new name, \u201cUnsinkable Sam!\u201d<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:image {\"align\":\"right\",\"id\":2018,\"width\":389,\"height\":211,\"sizeSlug\":\"large\",\"linkDestination\":\"none\"} -->\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-large is-resized\"><img src=\"https:\/\/bedtimehistorystories.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/1920px-Ark_Royal_NARA_45513193-1024x557.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2018\" width=\"389\" height=\"211\"\/><figcaption>HMS Ark Royal<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<!-- \/wp:image -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>This third ship was considered very lucky \u2013 it had survived several near misses and the Germans thought they had sunk her numerous times.&nbsp; But \u201cUnsinkable Sam\u201d (or Boo or Oscar) couldn\u2019t catch a break.&nbsp; Once again, his new home, the HMS Ark Royal, was hit by a torpedo within two weeks.&nbsp; Unsinkable Sam was enraged.&nbsp; Why did this keep happening to him?&nbsp; He hated everything about ships and water now.&nbsp; He just wanted to be on dry land.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Once again, he was found floating on a plank in the water, and eventually picked up hissing and growling but unharmed.\u00a0 He was delivered to the Governor\u2019s house in Gibraltar.\u00a0 He was finally on the solid ground surrounded by trees and birds.\u00a0 No more fish, mice, or battleships for Boo!<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>While at the Governor\u2019s house, he heard the words \u201cWorld War II\u201d spoken a lot.\u00a0 Was that what all the ships and noise and water were about?\u00a0 Well, one day he heard the Governor state that \u201cWorld War II\u201d was over and everyone was leaving the island of Gibraltar to go home.\u00a0 But where would Boo go?<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:heading {\"level\":3} -->\n<h3>Belfast, Ireland<\/h3>\n<!-- \/wp:heading -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>He was soon put into a crate and transported to Ireland.\u00a0 His new home was in Belfast at a \u201cHome for Sailors,\u201d the perfect place for war veterans like Boo, or Oscar, or Unsinkable Sam.\u00a0 And that is where he spent the remainder of his days, stalking crickets and chasing birds. He lived happily for 14 more years, until November 1955, when he passed away in peace and comfort, in a house filled with love.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:heading {\"level\":3} -->\n<h3>The Legend of Unsinkable Sam<\/h3>\n<!-- \/wp:heading -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>So, what do you think of Boo\u2019s \u2013 or \u201cUnsinkable Sam\u2019s\u201d story?&nbsp; Do you believe that cats have nine lives?&nbsp; Do you believe the myth of black cats crossing your path and bringing bad luck? Do you believe this cat was a blessing or a curse to the battleships and sailors?<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>I think this cat was very lucky.\u00a0 He survived three battleship sinkings where many men did not.\u00a0 On his first ship, the Bismarck, only 139 sailors survived out of 2,200, while 139 sailors died after the sinking of his second ship, the Cossack.\u00a0 But that wasn\u2019t the cat\u2019s fault.\u00a0 He just happened to be aboard battleships in the middle of a war. But he was lucky and survived it all, finally finding a home where he enjoyed peace and comfort for many years.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:heading {\"level\":3} -->\n<h3>What can we learn from Unsinkable Sam?<\/h3>\n<!-- \/wp:heading -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>I think this story reminds us that we may experience difficult times in our lives, but there is always a way out, a way to move forward to reach brighter days.&nbsp; If you just hang on, like Boo, Oscar, or Unsinkable Sam did on those planks in the ocean, better days will come.&nbsp; He was such a brave little cat,
